Southern Californians who would like to experience sustainable agriculture firsthand and aren't up for the trek out to New Mexico to see Earth Echo Farm might want to check out the Huntington Ranch. Part of the Huntington Library in San Marino, the ranch is a 15 acre demonstration farm featuring a semi-wild food forest. It's open to the public only through classes and tours, and unfortunately, all the initial ones are already full. Check the Huntington Ranch website and blog for more information and a calendar of events. See also these articles from the LA Times and Sunset magazine.
